Technology Competition: 3rd-5th Grade

We are excited about this year's GSES Student Technology Competition for 3rd-5th grade students. If your child is planning to participate, please make sure that you have completed the competition interest form by Friday, September 26th so that we can directly communicate information to participating families. Students will present their projects and speeches at our GSES school competition on November 10th & 11th during school. Fall Break is a great time to get a jump on creating!

Students have the opportunity to compete in 14 various categories by submitting an individual or partner project. The website linked below provides detailed information on each of the 14 categories with examples of some previously completed projects of state placers. The project can be something your child starts fresh this year or improves on from a previous year. We will even be working on some projects in our classes at school.

Please contact Mrs. Gassman (monica.gassman@jcss.us) if you have any questions.

Student Spotlights

Book Tasting

Recipe for Reading

Today’s recipe for readers: A dash of curiosity, a sprinkle of literary elements, and a whole lot of excitement for book club! 🍎📖✨ Mrs. Smith’s 4th graders participated in a Book Tasting! Students explored a diverse selection of challenging, high-interest novels, reading short snapshots to explore different genres, authors, and styles. 🍽️📖 This engaging activity not only helped students practice literary elements, but also gave them a chance to preview and select their top choices for our upcoming class book clubs! 💡❤️We can’t wait to see which novels they choose to “devour” together!

Building bridges

Building Bridges

Last week, Mrs. Clark’s class read "Here to There and Me to You" by Cheryl Keely—a book all about different kinds of bridges. After reading, students put their learning into action to design and build their own bridges! Using a variety of materials, they engineered creative ways for toys to safely cross a “pond” without getting wet. What an amazing way to celebrate Literacy Month—combining reading, creativity, and hands-on problem solving!

GSES Jr. Beta Club

Jr. Beta Club Induction

On Thursday 9/4/25, thirty-five 4th and 5th grade students were inducted into the GSES Jr. Beta Club. The Junior Beta Club is a student-centered national honor organization for grades 4-8 that promotes academic achievement, strong character, leadership, and service to others in the school and community. Members participate in activities like community service projects, developing life skills such as collaboration, creativity, and time management in a supportive environment of peers. We also welcomed three new officers, who were selected by their peers: Berkeley Doster (President), Alessandra Defuria (Vice-President), and Annie Perry (Secretary). A very special thank you to all of the Senior Beta Club members from Jackson County High School who volunteered and served at the induction ceremony!

Helpful Tech Tips

JCSS Apps for Parents

Wondering what programs you need to have as a parent of a student in Jackson County Public Schools? Below are the main apps and programs that parents need to have set up.

IMPORTANT NOTE! Several of these apps require parents to first have an Infinite Campus Parent Portal account! Please contact our Media Specialist, Mrs. Gassman (monica.gassman@jcss.us) if you need to set up a Parent Portal account first. Make sure to check each week’s newsletter for highlights focusing on each app, how it is used by JCSS, and how parents can navigate the app.
